Default Strange Builds

Personally, I run an Elementalist/Warrior and I've been trying to find something that works with fire. Alas the only thing I could come up with is with a fire based weapon and quick cast AoE's (like Phoenix). Even then, it doesn't seem to be working out. I'm begginning to think that the only parts that would complement each other in this respect is Earth + Tactics.

This is not really a topic asking for advice, but more one to discuss unusual builds. Discuss yours if you have any.

Most of my unusual builds are terrible. I haven't really put enough thought into a build concerning more than one character though--those are where the power is at. Because although one character can run around trying to do the best damage, being coordinated and setting up a strategy with your entire team can win you medals

I want to join a guild who is willing to play pet heavy teams in GvG or HoH. 10 plat says someone will not be able to resist saying pets suck.

I played around with a N/R "zookeeper" build focused on death magic and beast mastery with leftover points in soul reaping. I dumped it when I realized pets were really bad and that putrid was way more powerful than minions.

Now that pets have gotten a little boost and putrid got nerfed, I may dig it up and try it again.

I had a mantra of persistence build that was fun-

mantra of persistence
energy drain
ether feast
arcan conundrum
conjure phantasm
imagine burden
hex breaker
rez signet

It was good fun- I sometimes switched things around and used crippling anguish- that made it lots of fun when I had two warriors chasing me.

With persistence, my conjure phantasms lasted for 24 seconds- thats 240 damage. Not bad for something I can spam over the entire team.

When I had a monk to heal me, this build was great in random arena. Never tried it anywhere else.

Something (not too unusual) but rather fun is a Mo/R that specialises in trapping.
I like watching the enemy charging at me, foaming at the mouth and screaming "kill the monk"....only to fall flat on their backsides upon meeting a spike trap. So gratifying.

A smiting ranger (using a pet) springs to mind. I have never tried it but a balthazars aura on your pet can be quite handy i assume.

Eh I used to run an earth magic warrior. It didn't take long for me to realize how useless it was. You can have all the armor buffs in the world, but it means nothing in pvp when you don't get the agro.

I'm working on a Mesmer/Monk that gets by with absolutely no offensive or defensive abilities. Just skills that make her teammates work better. For example, I like to use:

Balthazar's Aura
the other Balthazar's skill
Convert Hexes
Inspire Enchantment
Resurrect
Energy Tap
Spirit Shackles
Drain Enchantment

Of course, this is only until I can switch to Elementalist secondary, and grab mark of Trogdor and go berserk with Fragility. And fast-casting huge spells and the like!

Umm... isn't W/E the most popular combo for warriors in PvP? A hammer warrior with Aftershock along with some buffs and wards is pretty good no?

Yes, kda warriors are popular and effective, but I was using self armor buffs, not offensive spells or area buffs.

Force Field Monk

This is a PvE build. It would be too vulnerable in PvP, but I've found it highly effective in the Fissure of Woe. I don't see any reason that this is really all that unusual, but I've never seen any one else run one.

Protection Prayers 16
Divine Favor 13

RoF
Guardian
Mend Condition
Aegis
Life Barrier
Divine Boon
Blessed Signet
Rebirth

At 13 Favor Blessed Signet returns a max of 21 energy per cast - which handily enough is exactly the return you get for maintaining 7 enchantments - a Life Barrier on each member of the party except yourself. Once you get this set up you will be regaining enough energy to cast Aegis on top of the barriers and the occasional RoF, Guardian or Mend as well.

Obviously you need to be paired with a Healer of some sort for this to really work well, since while you mitigate a massive amount of damage, you really can't heal jack. However, in cases where you wind up alone (the Healer drops frex) or if your Barriers are getting stripped too quickly, you can shut down your Force Field generator, toss up Divine Boon, and function fairly well as a Boon Protection Monk.

Energy management is critical at all times with this build. Keeping your barriers all up and running and actually casting spells without messing up your timing requires a tight eye on your skills and energy, and if you are in Boon Protector mode you will be lacking effective energy management and will have to conserve.

I would say that it is overall a match for a more standard PvE protection build, but more of a pain in the patootie to run. Still, if you monk in PvE and want a change of pace it can be fun.

Besides, who can resist a build that allows you to say, when you get all your enchants up and running, "Shields at maximum, Captain!"

Wand them to death with frenzy. I think I saw a build like that in Campfire.

EinValantine: why not add Balthazar's Spirit to that build and get 1 energy every time damage gets mitigated to you, or is that the 'strangeness' of your build specifically? Would pretty much solve your energy concerns and then some.

Anyway, this entire thread should be in build discussion forum, it has nothing to do with the community.

I'm working on a martyr monk. The name is for the elite spell Martyr, which is like a party draw conditions. It is a monk/mesmer that uses:

Martyr
Draw Conditions
Mend Ailment or Mend Conditions
Remove Hex
Smite Hex
Convert Hex
Inspired Hex
Rez Signet

I think it would work in Tombs and GvG as a support Monk, but I can never get in a Tombs group to try it and I usually have to be a healer for GvG. The biggest problem I find I have is removing hexes, just because the recharge time on remove hex spells is so long.

Damage is not redirected with Life Barrier, so Balthazar's Spirit would have no use. You are thinking of Life Bond.

Um, What is SNA?

Out of curiosity does blackout go above 6 second with a mesmer primary? I never thought about using that with pets.

Ah right, I was, must've read 'Life' and auto-filled in the rest. Life Bond is actually quite viable in the Fissure of Woe though, and the redirection itself usually makes it more appealing to take along than Life Barrier.
